What are the drawbacks of India's education system and what are the solutions ?

DRAWBACKS  OF THE INDIA'S EDUCATION SYSTEM

INTRODUCTION

Education plays an important role in the development of an individual, society and nation. Education is an asset for any country. Education helps in building responsible citizens of the country. Education enables us to fight injustice in society. Every individual has the right to get a good education and thus a proper education system is compulsory for any country. Education play important role in one's life. It affects our life from birth to death. So, there is a great need to be strong in our education system. But, there is a lot of drawback to the Indian education system. If we start listing then we would need a lot of time and space.

The problem of Indian education

Lack of practical knowledge;

Indian Education system judge students based on their academic performance and not on their overall performance. This affects those students who are not good at specific subjects. Bookish knowledge is the prime motto of the Indian education system. The focus is given on the theoretical knowledge only not on practical knowledge. As a result, most Indian student gets unemployed despite having high qualification.

No scope for other fields except studies;

As you know that since early times our Indian education system has been a traditional educational system. In other words, you can call it the gurukul system where all types of education were provided to students. They were not unknown from any field. They used to learn music, art, archery, yoga, literature, and so on. But, with time, many changes happened in our education system and the modern education system started. The modern school system was brought to India in the 1830s by Lord Thomas Babington Macaulay. This new education system was very different from the ancient times 'Gurukuls' system. At that time all subjects like Sanskrit to the holy scriptures and from Mathematics to Metaphysics were taught. The guru teaches the student everything that he wants to learn, from Sanskrit to the Holy Scriptures and from Mathematics to Metaphysics. The student stayed in a gurukul for a long period until the guru felt that he had taught everything. All of the learning was closely related to nature and life accordingly and not just confined to memorizing subject matter. Whereas the modern school system was confined to subjects such as science, English and mathematics and no scope for subjects like metaphysics and philosophy. Modern education emphasizes taking more and more degrees were no need for skill. Right from the beginning, parents and teachers emphasize studies and getting good marks. They never encourage other fields. In a real sense, If someone tries for other fields then they have to leave it on halfway because of lack of opportunity in another field. Indian Govt also does not provide facilities and environment for the development of another field. In India Sports, Photography, Acting, Music etc. are considered as hobbies, not a profession. It is not included in the education system. Moreover, the education period is so long that the average age of getting a job in India is between 22-24.

Wrong learning method

One of the main problems of our system is the wrong learning methodology. If the students are incapable of understanding a concept then the teacher suggests "ratta mar" as a learning method. The same scene can be seen of the Indian classroom as shown in the movie '3 -IDIOTS'. This movie depicts very nicely what happens when students give speeches without understanding the subject matter. Our system promotes students basically to mug up the entire textbook without even understanding it and then to present the same in the examination paper. And by doing so students will be rank holders.

Lack of funds and quality teachers

In Indian colleges, there is a lack of funds and infrastructure. Many colleges don't have enough funds to enhance the quality of education and hence lacks the infrastructure facility, teaching environment and quality teachers. Infrastructure facilities at schools and colleges across rural areas provides a very poor quality of education. There is a great lack of good and trained teachers. Teachers are not paid adequately, as they are not much qualified so they don't do work with interest.

No value to education

Especially, in rural areas, most parents are not interested to send their children to schools to get basic education, as they are illiterate so they don't know the importance of education. Since childhood, they believe in earning money and send their kids far away for earning. Besides, there is no space for creative learning and thinking and students are always bound to a specific syllabus and are not encouraged for better learning so that they get jobs in future.

How It can be Improved
                  (Or)
               Solutions

The first and foremost Important thing is, students should be given practical knowledge. The curriculum should be framed according to the present needs of the world. There has to be a change in the system for the employment of teachers and faculty. Teachers and faculty should be knowledgeable for which they should give proper training. Govt should emphasize quality education. The government and other entities need to understand the importance of quality and education. Overall development of a child has to be considered, and importance should be given to bringing out a total holistic development of the children.

CONCLUSION

No doubt, we all are sufferers of the Indian education system where a lot of improvement is needed. Skill-based education, as well as quality education, is the need of the hour then only our country would progress.
