What is the significance of Sankranthi, and why is it celebrated?

What is the significance of Sankranthi, and why is it celebrated?

Makar Sankranti, also known as Maghi, Til Sankranti, Uttarayana, or Pongal, is a festival celebrated in India and Nepal that has multiple meanings: Harvest

It's a harvest festival that marks the end of winter and the start of longer days. It's a time of celebration for farming communities who have reaped the fruits of their labor.
Sun worship
It's a day to worship the sun god, Surya, and to give thanks for prosperity and success.
Spiritual practices
People take a holy dip in rivers like the Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri. This is believed to absolve past sins and bring merit.
Seasonal change
It marks the sun's transition into the Capricorn zodiac sign, or Makara Rashi.
End of negativities
It's a day to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness, as Lord Vishnu defeated demons and buried them under a mountain.
Kite flying
Some people fly kites as a gesture of appreciation to the gods.
Sweets
People make sticky sweets made from sesame and jaggery to symbolize joyfulness and peace.
Mythology
According to a myth, Bhishma Pitamah, a character from the Mahabharata, chose to die during this auspicious periodMakar Sankranti emphasizes the practice of daan (charity). People donate food, clothes, and essentials to the less fortunate, reflecting the spiritual belief that selfless giving purifies the soul. Donating til (sesame), jaggery, and grains holds great significance, as it symbolizes sacrifice, humility, and goodwill. Conclusion
Sankranthi is much more than a festival; it is a celebration of life itself. Rooted in gratitude, community, and renewal, it reminds us of the cycles of nature and the interconnectedness of all beings. As we celebrate Sankranthi with joy and reverence, let us embrace its timeless values and spread harmony, not just in our homes but across the world.
