National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is the only medical entrance test for the students aspiring to pursue medical courses (UG) in medical colleges in India. It will be conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency). Until 2018, NEET was conducted by the CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education), however, NTA was handed over this responsibility in the year 2019.
Annually NTA conducts NEET (UG) for admission to MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BSMS, BUMS, BHMS, AYUSH, Veterinary, and other undergraduate medical courses in approved/recognized Medical/Dental & other Colleges/ Institutes in India. Even the admission to MBBS course in AIIMS, New Delhi, JIPMER and all AIIMS like Institutions will be made through NEET.
Every year nearly 16 lakh students appear for this test. It will be conducted in offline mode (pen and paper) in 155 cities at around 3840 exam centres. NEET is conducted in 11 languages. It is a 3hrs exam and it will be held from 2 pm to 5 pm.
General category candidates must score 50 per cent or above in the PCB section in Class 12 to be eligible for NEET. According to the notification released by NTA, a candidate can appear for NEET any number of times. There is no restriction on the number of attempts permitted.
More than 500 medical colleges and nearly 315 dental colleges give admissions based on NEET score. In all those colleges nearly 83,000 MBBS seats, around 27,000 BDS seats, nearly 52,000 AYUSH seats and around 520 B.V.Sc & A.H are available.
