Drawbacks of Indian Education System
The modern school system was brought to India in the 1830s by Lord Thomas Babington Macaulay.
This new education system was very different from the ancient times, when โGurukulsโ existed, where subjects like Sanskrit to the holy scriptures and from Mathematics to Metaphysics were taught. The modern school system was confined to subjects such as science and mathematics, and subjects like metaphysics and philosophy were considered unnecessary.
According to India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), India is home to over 250 million school students, with 500 million people in the age bracket of 5-24 years present a large opportunity in the education sector.
India is the second-largest market for E-learning after the US and nurturing ground for premier institutions like IIT and NITs, which are considered as one of the best colleges across the world. Why is it still that a country like India is still demanding a better education system
Drawbacks of Indian Education Systemย
Poor Grading Systemย
The Indian Education system judge students on the basis of their academic performance and not on their overall performance. This affects those students who are not that good at specific subjects. The focus is only on the theory subjects, which doesnโt allow a student to look beyond the main subjects which he or she chooses.ย
Less Attention to Practical knowledgeย
While theoretical understanding of any subject is important, it does not play a major role when it comes to implementing these ideas in the real world. This practice makes them perplexed when the students go out in the real world due to a lack of practical knowledge.ย

Mugging Upย
It is often seen that students just mug up the formulas and theories without actually understanding them. This is because of less attention given to the understanding part before moving forward solving any problem.
Due to the huge syllabus and less time, students usually mug up to get marks. Even teachers in schools and colleges expect students to write the exact definition given in the textbooks. This does not allow the students to think out of the box.
Logical and analytical thinking is not promoted, and also students are not encouraged to develop opinions. This is also because the Indian Education system focuses more on scoring good percentages rather than actual comprehensive evaluation.ย
Not able to choose a variety of Subjectsย
Students in India do not get the chance to choose different subjects from different streams. For example, a commerce student cannot take Biology even if he is really interested. This is because the education system has segregated the streams on the basis of subjects.
Also, there are not enough subjects to choose according to the studentโs choice. This is the reason that students fail to get admission into colleges, and they keep trying only in one direction, as they do not have much knowledge about the other fields.ย
Quality of Teachersย
Though India has a lot of experienced teachers, schools in rural areas still face scarcity when it comes to the quality of these teachers. A lot of these teachers are not experienced and qualified enough to teach the students who sometimes leads to losing the basic demand from education.

Teachers at government schools are getting salaries, but still only a few take their profession seriously. This results in poor education for the students.ย
Problems with Private Schoolsย
Private schools are more interested in the number of students who take admission rather than focusing on the quality of their education. There are times when the classrooms are full, and thus the teacher is not able to focus particularly on one child. Due to this, though education is given to a lot, there are only a few who truly takes it in.ย
No overall developmentย
In India, we give more importance to marks and not to the overall development. Less focus on extra-curricular activities is also a reason why students going to colleges are not ready to face the realities. This is also the reason that why after college, when students sit for the placements, they are not corporate ready to face the world.
With more importance given to marks, students do not get the chance to focus on their weaknesses. Soft skills are important in a personโs life because without that, degrees hold no value, especially in a competitive world that we are currently preparing our kids for.ย
How can we improve the Indian Education System?ย
Improving the grading system should be the primary importance. Rote learning should be avoided. At the same time, students should be given practical knowledge. The curriculum should be framed according to the present needs of the world. There has to be changed in the system for the employment of teachers and faculties.
Teachers and faculties should be given proper training. The government and other entities need to understand the importance of quality and education. Overall development of a child has to be considered, and importance should be given to bringing out a total holistic development of the child.ย
